Evaluation Excavation
Venue. Safefield Farm, Alconbury Weston.
Dates. 31 May - 3 Jun 25.
Participation. All members of the Sawtry, Alconburys and JigSaw Cambridgeshire communities.
Visitors. The site will be open to visitors on an ad hoc basis.
Survey Aims and Strategy. This is a continuation of the desktop survey (Season 1) and an earlier evaluation excavation undertaken in Oct 22 (Season 2). The evaluation pit excavated in Oct 22 will be re-opened. The purpose of this evaluation is to further determine the nature of the Roman/Romano-British pottery and metal objects assemblage discovered by Landowners Historical Research Group (LHRG) detectorists.
Opportunities. This excavation will give volunteers with excavation experience the opportunity to develop their excavation skills and techniques, and will give volunteers with no excavation experience the opportunity to learn the principles of archaeological excavation, and basic skills and techniques.
