16-2 Sawtry Judith

The aims of this project are to investigate the archaeological and historical records in order to determine the original location of the Saxon Manor and Ville of Sawtry Judith and determine the archaeological landscapes of Sawtry Judith, specifically:

- investigate lands adjacent to the parish church identified as functioning on the 1612 map drawn by William Senior, believed to be the Church of St Mary - the manorial and parish church of Sawtry Judith, for evidence of Saxon and/or early Norman settlement

- confirm the location of the Church of St Mary and the Sawtry Judith manorial house

- investigate locations elsewhere within the boundaries of Sawtry Judith identified as, or otherwise believed to be, possible locations for the medieval village of Sawtry Judith; if proven, determine a chronology of establishment, occupation and abandonment; if disproven, determine the nature and dates of the site

- identify the archaeological landscapes of Sawtry Judith and place them within the context of the wider archaeological landscapes of Sawtry as a whole
