17-2 Sawtry Archaeological Record

The aims of this project are to investigate the archaeological record within the existing civil parish boundary and, to provide a context for that record, investigate the broader archaeological record between Godmanchester and Water Newton, specifically:

- develop a detailed picture of the archaeological landscapes within the civil parish boundary of Sawtry in order to better understand the earliest settlements and subsistence strategies, and the subsequent settlement development through to the modern landscape

- develop a detailed picture of the wider archaeological landscapes of neighbouring settlement, trade and governance between Godmanchester and Water Newton, in which the landscapes of Sawtry can be contextualized

- identify settlements, structures, land usage and other activities within those landscapes

- investigate how geology and geography influenced the growth of settlements, the setting out of field systems and stock enclosures, industrial practices and trade networks

- investigate to what extent, if any, monuments and other landscape features of human construct were incorporated into subsequent landscapes, and whether these influenced, or were influenced by, belief systems
